When the Voivode received Elgin's letter and gifts the Acropolis was immediately opened avrogianni with Clare Byam Shaw

so the Rev. Philip Hunt was able to lead Luisieri and his men into the Parthenon itself.

These 'artists' were then able to clamber over the temple with windlasses, ropes and saws and force apart the ancient stone structure, in order to lower metopes and the freize.

The Elgins then visited Athens and the Acropolis to see how work was progressing,haw

 

and while the Disdar reluctantly allowed the sculptures to be hacked from the temple, the Elgins

and their entourage left for Corinth and the Peloponnese to find more artifacts for his collection;

and after visiting 'Agamemnon's tomb' in Mycenae, they inspected the 'Lion's Gate' which the Rev. Hunt had suggested earlier could be loaded onto his Lordship's brig……

Lady Elgin persuades the captain to take four more extra boxes of sculptures, including the horses head, while Hamilton organises some live horses to board, one of which was a gift for the Voivode.
